So, You’re Thinking About Going to Therapy?
Considering therapy can bring up a whirlwind of emotions—excitement, skepticism, and maybe even fear. If you're wondering, Will therapy even help me? or What will it be like?, you're not alone. Many people have these thoughts when considering therapy for the first time, or after a previous experience that didn’t meet expectations.
Starting something new can be nerve-wracking. Therapy is no different. The idea of opening up to someone you don’t know can feel vulnerable and overwhelming. Whether this is your first time considering therapy, or you’ve been putting it off for a while, it’s completely normal to feel anxious, skeptical, or uncertain.
Perhaps you've tried scheduling therapy appointments before but canceled last minute. Or maybe, in the past, therapy didn’t work out the way you hoped, leaving you unsure about trying again. That’s okay! Therapy requires a lot of vulnerability, and it can be hard to show up when you're feeling unsure or afraid. But that's also where the power of therapy lies.
Why Therapy Can Be Hard:
The issues you bring to therapy—whether it's anxiety, depression, relationship stress, grief, or trauma—are often deeply personal. They may feel too big or too difficult to handle on your own. It’s normal to feel embarrassment or shame about opening up about these struggles to someone you’ve just met, a stranger, no less. And yet, that’s the beauty of therapy.
A trained therapist is there to empathetically listen and provide guidance through the most challenging parts of your life. They’re not there to judge, but to support you. They will help you explore what’s causing you distress and work together to find healing.
Why You Deserve Therapy:
It's completely normal to feel uncertain about therapy, but remember—therapy is one of the most loving things you can do for yourself. It's about taking care of your mental health, addressing difficult experiences, and giving yourself the support you deserve. As a therapist who also sees my own therapist, I know firsthand how uncomfortable it can be to be on the other side of the couch. But I also know how deeply healing it is to feel understood and supported.
Therapy isn’t easy at first. It’s a journey that requires trust, vulnerability, and patience. But I encourage you to take that first step. You deserve to feel heard, understood, and supported.
